Today, Marshall is playing a vital role in the Artemis program by developing the Space Launch System, the backbone of NASA’s exploration plans and the only rocket capable of sending humans to the Moon and Mars. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the first crewed Project Mercury flight. During the 15-minute suborbital flight, Shepard reached an altitude of 115 miles and traveled 302 miles. It was the fourth flight of the Mercury-Redstone rocket, developed at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. This week in 1961, astronaut Alan Shepard lifted off in the Freedom 7 spacecraft from Cape Canaveral, Florida, embarking on the first crewed space mission for the United States. Kennedy committed the United States to achieving a lunar landing before the end of the decade. Three weeks later, based on the success of Shepard’s brief flight, President John F. Shepard became the first American in space during a suborbital flight aboard his Mercury capsule named Freedom 7. Gagarin completed a single orbit around the Earth aboard his Vostok capsule. The Soviets won the race in April 1961 when cosmonaut Yuri A. The Soviets kept their plans secret but began their own human spaceflight program and selected their own team of 20 cosmonauts in 1960. The United States initiated Project Mercury in 1958 to put the first American into space and selected its first group of astronauts in 1959 to begin training for that mission.
